Introduction
The Department of Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering
It has been 41 years since naval architecture and ocean engineering started in 1971 in South Korea. In 2012 South Korea built 41% of all the vessels constructed in the world.
Korea's seven shipyards belong to the world best ten shipyards and Hyundai Heavy Industries, the world biggest shipyard, has its headquarters in Ulsan. HHI has supported the University of Ulsan which is a mecca of naval architecture and ocean engineering industry. UOU is the only four year college located in Ulsan city with its 1.1 million population. The department of naval architecture and ocean engineering has a direct connection with HHI and has played a pivotal role in UOU.
The Department has achieved its goal of reaching excellence in research, education and facility by successfully carrying out the SOTOP Project backed up by HHI and UOU for the last 6 years.
The Department payed 40% of its tuition fee received for scholarships in 2012. Also the department has been implementing the programs of combining undergraduate and master courses through which some excellent students can secure their job in HHI. As such the faculty strives for the higher standards of education which will produce globally competent graduates.

Programs
A combined program of naval architecture and ocean engineering is offered.
▷ This program offers the courses relevant to designing and building a ship ranged from merchant vessels like oil tankers, containers, to warships, passenger ships, LNG, and high-tech ships. The courses offered also include studies about exploration and excavation of marine resources as well as design building and installation of a wide variety of marine structures.
Educational objectives
Educational Objectives
The objectives are in line with the educational goal of UOU and the Engineering College.
First, to nurture a students to be a person of broad liberal culture and global personalty as well as of responsibility for and pride in their specialization.
Second, to nurture a student to be able to easily adapt to fields. This is done through educating basic major subjects.
Third, to improve a student to be creative to make an advancement. This is achieved through educating fundamental subjects.
Fourth, to enhance a student to easily adapt to jobs. This is achieved through strengthening education by means of experiment and on site training.
Educational content
※ This note is provided only for the convenience of the international students in the NAOE graduate program. For the clarification of any possible conflict of the rules or misunderstanding, each student should consult with the department office and/or supervising professors.

NAOE Graduate Program Rules

제1조(Degree Programs)
There is two major tracks in the Graduate program of the School of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering: (a)Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding, and (b)Ocean Engineering. Students have to choose one of the above two major tracks. For the students admitted from the Second(fall) semester of 2009, one can add an optional dual-major track, (c)Ocean Energy, in addition to their primary-major track, which is either (a)Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding or (b)Ocean Engineering.

제2조(Mandatory Courses)
① Students in Master’s degree program should take the mandatory courses listed in the NAOE-Graduate Program Addendum.
② Students in Doctoral degree program should take the mandatory courses required for the Master degree. The mandatory course(s) may be substituted with other course(s), if the chairman approves.

제3조(Thesis/Dissertation Committee)
① Master thesis committee, composed of three members, should be formed at least six months before the official graduation date.
② Doctoral dissertation committee, composed of five members including at least one out-of-department member, should be formed at least one year before the official graduation date.

제4조(Qualifying Exam)
① Master degree qualifying exam is composed of three subjects, namely at least one mandatory subject and two additional subjects, designated by the thesis supervising professor.
② Doctoral degree qualifying exam is composed of four subjects, namely one mandatory subject and three additional subjects, designated by thesis supervising professor.

제5조(Candidacy requirement)
① Master degree candidate(who satisfied course requirement and passed qualifying exam) is eligible to presented his/her thesis, only if he/she presented at least one Nation-wide Domestic Conference paper.
② Doctoral degree candidate(who satisfied course requirement and passed qualifying exam) is eligible to presented his/her dissertation, only if he/she presented at least two Nation-wide Domestic Conference paper and published at least one Nation-wide Domestic Journal paper.

NAOE Graduate Program Addendum

1. Mandatory Courses
① Students in Master program should take the following mandatory courses: Advanced Fluid Mechanics(고급유체역학,WA1214) and Special Topics in Marine Structural Mechanics(구조역학특론,WA1215).

② Students in Doctoral program should take the mandatory courses required for the students in master program. One may substitute (a)the mandatory course(s) with other non-mandatory course(s), with permission of the chairman.

2. Qualifying Exam
① Master degree qualifying exam is composed of three subjects, designated by the supervisor, including at least one of the mandatory courses: Advanced Fluid Mechanics(고급유체역학,WA1214) and Special Topics in Marine Structural Mechanics(구조역학특론,WA1215).

② Master degree qualifying exam is composed of four subjects, designated by the supervisor.
