Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies

The department aims to develop practical capabilities and qualifications as fluent speakers of Spanish and experts in the Spanish speaking parts of the world needed in the 21st century.

After the department was established in 1989, the Spanish Education major in the Graduate School of Education commenced in 1997 and the teacher training course for Spanish teachers in secondary schools was introduced in 1998. In 2012, our department was changed to Spanish Latin American Studies at the College of International Studies. Presently, our department is composed of 8 professors (including two foreign professors) and 200 or so students.

The study area is divided into three fields; language, literature, and area studies to nurture practical human resources equipped with a broad knowledge in language, literature, economics, politics, and society in the Spanish speaking world. In language studies, a good command of Spanish based on systematic grammar knowledge, practical speaking ability, and reading ability is our main objective. In literature studies, understanding of Spanish culture and thoughts through their literature works is our primary concern. Finally in area studies, building practical knowledge is focused for expanding into the area. The courses cover understanding politics, economy, society and history of the Spanish speaking world.

Since 1996, for the first time in Spanish related departments in Korea, our department has allowed students to have a long-term overseas education. Through departmental and university foundation cooperation, sophomores and juniors who want to study abroad are sent to the sister schools for one semester. They study and acquire credits from the local universities or colleges. Currently, our sister schools are ALCALA University and ALICANTE University in Spain, National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico, Universidad de Buenos Aires(UBA) in Argentina, JAVERIANA University in Colombia, and Universidad de Costa Rica in Costa Rica.
